1. Ballet dancers and students of ballet schools, Russian or foreign, may take part in the competition. Grand Prix and first prize winners of "Arabesque" competitions are not admitted to the Competition.
2. Admission to the Competition for the competitors born not earlier than 31 December 1983 and not later than 31 December 1996.
3. To participate in the Competition, the candidates are requested to apply by 18 February 2010 to the Board of Directors of the Competition (The Ballet Competition "Arabesque-2010" Theatre of Opera and Ballet, 25a Petropavlovskaya (Kommunisticheskaya) St., Perm 614000, Russia) with the following:
- completed Application Form and the performance programme on the enclosed model;
- scanned copy of passport;
- one black and white photograph (3,5x4,5 cm) and one in full-length dance pose (you may submit a photo as a graphic file, if so, the quality of the picture should be appropriate for printing on paper, graphic resolution no less than 300 dpi);
- curriculum vitae;
- certificate of a received dance education (copy) or of private classes.
4. Entrance fee of 2500 rubles (or an equivalent amount in euros or US dollars) for the foreign participants will be paid on the day of arrival in Perm.
5. The Competition Board of Directors will not be able to refund entrance fees and the documents to applicants who fail to compete.
6. Competitors must affirm the programme of their performance in each round on the day of arrival while being registered and must not change it during the Competition period.
Rules and Regulations
1. Participants may appear either as soloists (female and male) or as couples, each being examined individually. A competitor may appear with non-competing partner.
2. The Jury of the Competition is formed by its Chairman Vladimir Vasiliev.
3. The Jury of Press is formed by the Theatrical Association of the Russian Federation.
4. The Competition will be held in three rounds and performed on the theatre stage (12 m wide, 10 m deep, without slope).
5. All performances are open to the public.
6. The pieces performed in one of the rounds must not be the same as performed in the others.
7. The order of appearance of each competitor will be determined by drawing of numbers and preserved till the end of the Competition.
8. For the couples the number of the female competitor will be used.
9. For the competitors dancing variations the interval between the performances should not be less than 15 minutes.
10. The finalists will perform for the two unpaid final dance galas with the programme affirmed by the jury.
11. If one of the partners in a couple is not admitted to the semi-final or final rounds, he (she) must perform as a partner of the other competitor, admitted to the semi-finals and finals and also at the final gala performances.
12. The members of the jury must not rehearse or rate their pupils during the holding of the Competition.
13. Competitors will bring their own pianists, who must have the piano scores, or to use, mini-discs or CD recordings, which must be submitted to the Organizing Committee after drawing of numbers. The competitors are required to submit the recordings for each round separately.
Moreover, the competitors should have an audio compact disc (CD) with the music for all the rounds programme recorded.
14. Each recording must be labelled with a clear indication of the name and the lot of the performer, the title of the piece, its duration and which round it is performed at. Recordings should be made using professional equipment.
15. The accepted applicants will be notified of the date of their arrival in Perm by the Competition Board of Directors not later than 30 days before the finishing of the Competition.
Financial Clauses
1. The Board of Directors will arrange and pay for the following:
- the meals for the participants and their partners during participation in the Competition;
- the hotel and the travel expenses in roubles to Perm and back equal to the cost in a compartment train, for the Russian competitors, admitted to the third round, their partners and coaches;
- the hotel and the travel expenses in roubles from Moscow to Perm and back equal to the cost in a compartment train, for the foreign competitors, admitted to the third round, and also their partners.
To have their travel expenses reimbursed, Participants should submit the original travel documents to the accounts service of the Theatre (including the round-trip tickets and tickets for the way back which should be sent to the Theatre by post).
If electronic tickets are used, Participants should keep and bring the original boarding pass.
2. Participants in the Competition not admitted to the semi-finals and finals, and also their partners and coaches, may stay in Perm till the end of the Competition at their expenses.
3. Competitors, awarded a prize for the performance of contemporary choreography, or the performers of a contemporary number by a choreographer, awarded for the best choreography, are granted the same financial conditions as the finalists (see clause 1).
The Competition Board of Directors will provide the competitors with the rehearsal rooms and with one stage rehearsal before each round.
The Competition Board of Directors will not provide the competitors with any kind of insurance.
The Competition Board of Directors will not provide the competitors with the stage costumes, footwear and music scores.
During the competition period masters of the classical dance are supposed to conduct master classes.
The competition board of directors reserves the right to invite the laureates and owners of the competition certificates to participate in gala performances.
The Competition Board of Directors reserves the right to broadcast all competition events, to shoot films, make video recordings and further spread them without paying the fees to the competitors and their partners.
Video- and photoshooting at the competition will be permissible only by the Directors’ authorization.
In case of incomprehension of the present rules interpretation, the identical Russian text is considered to be valid.
Please, pay special attention to the programmes of rounds I and II which are radically modified!
ROUND I
Classical Choreography
Competitors must perform one pas de deux (for couples) or two variations (for soloists) by choreographers of the XIX-XXI centuries.
ROUND II (SEMI-FINALS)
1. Classical Choreography
One pas de deux (for couples) or two variations (for soloists) or a separate piece (for couples and soloists) with music by P.I.Tchaikovsky by choreographer of the XIX-XXI centuries.
2. Contemporary Choreography
Semi-finalists must perform a modern or jazz dance or a piece of a free or any other style dance with the performing time not exceeding 4 minutes with music by any composer and choreographed not earlier than 2004. Original choreography created specially for the Competition "Arabesque-2010" and the best performers of contemporary piece are encouraged by special awards.
Dancers not taking part in the first and third rounds of the Competition, as well as competitors not admitted to the second round, are also allowed to show pieces especially created for the Competition “Arabesque-2010”.
ROUND III (FINALS)
Classical Choreography
Finalists must perform one pas de deux (for couples) or two variations (for soloists) by choreographers of the XIX-XXI centuries.
Awards
Sergei Diaghilev Award (Grand Prix)
A cash prize of 150 000 roubles and the title of Laureate of International Competition is given to the best competitor.
Two first awards (one female and one male). A cash prize of 90 000 roubles each and the titles of Laureates of International Competition.
Two second awards (one female and one male). A cash prize of 60 000 roubles each and the titles of Laureates of International Competition.
Two third awards (one female and one male). A cash prize of 30 000 roubles each and the titles of Laureates of International Competition.
Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev Award. A cash prize of $2,500.00 to the best couple.
Natalia Makarova Award. A cash prize of $1,000.00 to the best female dancer.
Mikhail Baryshnikov Award. A cash prize of $1,000.00 to the best male dancer.
Japanese-Russian couple Yukari Saito and Nikolai Fyodorov Award. A cash prize of $1,000.00 to the most talented dancers among the youngest competitors.
George Zoritch Award. A cash prize of $1,000.00 to the best female or male dancers for technical precision and performance artistry.
Nina Novak Award. A cash prize of $1,000.00.
Marius Petipa Award. A cash prize of 30 000 roubles, established by Perm public foundation "Pearl of the Urals", for the purity of classical dance.
"Sberbank" – Bank of Western Urals Award (in honour of Galina Ulanova). A cash prize of $1,000.00.
A cash prize of 60 000 roubles to the ballet master for a best contemporary choreography piece especially created for the Competition.
A cash prize of 30 000 roubles for the best performing of a piece of contemporary choreography.
The Perm State Opera and Ballet Award. A special prize of 30 000 roubles for the best performing of a choreographic piece with music by P. I. Tchaikovsky.
Jury of the Press Award established by Theatrical Association of Russia.
Andrei Kibanov Award. A cash prize of $1,000.00 to a talented dancer representing the city of Perm.
The monetary prizes are received by the winners in roubles with the collected income tax.
The unawarded finalists and also the best non-competing partners, the best coaches and the best concertmasters will be presented with the Competition certificates and monetary awards.
The Jury reserves the right:
- not to award all the prizes;
- to divide one prize among the contestants;
- to extend the prize in any of the said nominations, in the event that some prize is not awarded, using the remaining funds.
State and public organizations, companies and individuals will be able to establish other special prizes in conformity with the Competition Organizing Committee.
